"Choose a job you
love and you will never have to work a day in your life."
Confucius
Your resume presents a written
portrait of you and your skills. This description of you is the first and most important
step in your job search. Before you can describe yourself to someone else, you must know
yourself. By clearly understanding what is most important to you in considering a career
change, the recruiter can do a much better job of finding an opportunity that will be just
right for you!
There are three standard types of resumes:
Chronological - The chronological resume presents your work history and
accomplishments in reverse chronological order. It contains job titles, employer names,
dates worked, and job descriptions.
Functional - The functional resume emphasizes your skills
and accomplishments. They are listed without necessarily relating them to specific
positions.
The Combination - Chronological and Functional elements
can be combined in a single resume.
Remember to:
- Keep sentences and paragraphs short
- Use active tense and action words
- Use bulleted statements as needed
- Use amounts or dollar values where appropriate
- Put your strongest statement first, and focus on specific
accomplishments
- Check your resume carefully for spelling, punctuation, and
grammatical errors
When working with a recruiter, DO:
- Return calls
- Keep a list of all the companies and recruiters to whom you have
sent your resume.
- Let the recruiter know when you are no longer available
- Provide referrals of other potential candidates for a position if
you're not interested
- Be honest. Skeletons will come out of the closet!
- Contact only one or two recruiters
